Des Moines will be crawling with film crews this weekend
54 Film Teams to Kick off International Film Event Friday night setting a new Des Moines Record. On Friday July 28, 54 filmmaking teams will gather at the Des Moines Historical Building to kick-off the 19th year of competition for the 48 Hour Film Project in Des Moines. They will draw their films’ genres out of a hat and find out the required character, prop and line of dialogue which must be included in their final short film. · Call for visual artists – have your work become part of Iowa’s historical publications. The State Historical Society of Iowa is calling for Iowa artists to submit artwork for the 2024 covers of The Annals of Iowa, a quarterly publication from SHSI. This legacy publication, established in 1863, examines the deeds, misdeeds, and accomplishments of our predecessors and shows how those actions fit into the larger mosaic of Iowa’s history. It is distributed to hundreds of subscribers throughout the United States and Canada, with a digital footprint that receives millions of downloads (500,000 in 2022 alone). Submission deadline: Aug 1. · Social Justice Saturdays at the Jordan House Museum (2001 Fuller Road) the 2nd Saturday of August. Eighth Annual Cloris Leachman Excellence in Theatre Awards
Local actors Stephanie Schneider and Michael Howland will host the eighth annual Cloris Leachman Excellence in Theatre Arts Awards, set for 7 p.m. Aug. 27 at Hoyt Sherman Place. The event begins with an indoor/outdoor reception at 6 p.m., followed by the program inside, which will honor nearly 40 productions from nine local companies produced during the 2022-2023 season. Admission is free, thanks to support from Leachman Lumber and Bravo Greater Des Moines. And take note: f you’d like to volunteer to be a Cloris Awards judge for the 2023-2024 season, apply by Aug. 14. Judges will get free tickets to see 7-10 assigned shows during the next year.
