Quote of the Week

In honor of Juneteenth
“If there is just about anything to rejoice it can be my ancestors, African People who survived the atrocity and stain of slavery… I honor them these days with a guarantee that I will keep on to combat for your unexplored desires and hopes.” —Viola Davis, an American actress and producer. The recipient of numerous accolades, Davis is one of the few performers to have been awarded an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony.

I. This week’s guests on The Culture Buzz –

11:00 AM – Micaela Preskill is the Midwest States Advocate for E2, a nonprofit organization dedicated to finding paths of success for both economy and environment. Listen as Micaela shares fascinating details about how being good to the Earth can also be good to the economy. This continued dialogue follows the interview with Bob Keefe, E2’s Executive Director, and his book, Climatenomics: Washington, Wall Street and the Economic Battle to Save Our Planet (check out the interview in The Culture Buzz Podcast Library). “This book is both timely and essential, coming at this most pivotal moment in the battle against the climate crisis. In Climatenomics, Bob Keefe boldly lays out a framework for Washington, Wall Street, policy and business to unite in an all-hands-on-deck-approach to tackling this crisis. This is a must read for everybody who has a stake in the future of our planet and our economy.” – U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, chairman, U.S. Senate Committee on Finance https://e2.org/

11:11 AM – Charles Soule is a New York-based, #1 New York Times best-selling novelist, comic book writer, musician and former attorney. He is the author of some of the most prominent comic stories of the last decade for Marvel, DC and Lucasfilm. Now he delivers a powerful, enticing journey with his new novel, The Endless Vessel. “The Endless Vessel is a thrilling hunt, haunting mystery, and ominous prediction all in one, but most of all, it’s a poignant reminder of what it means to be human—to despair, to love, and to refuse to give up hope, even in the final hour.” — Peng Shepherd, bestselling author of The Cartographers https://www.charlessoule.com/

11:27 AM – Gender Without Identity offers an innovative and at times unsettling theory of gender formation their powerfully insightful and illuminating book. Avgi Saketopoulou and Ann Pellegrini bring deeply researched perspective in understanding gender in today’s world. “Based on an award-winning article that was censored before it could be published, Gender without Identity offers nothing less than a revolutionary new psychoanalytic theory of gender. Rejecting the facile notion of a “core gender identity,” Saketopoulou and Pellegrini offer a theory of gender that begins with the (at times traumatic) intrusion of the other and is made of culture. At the heart of this book is an ethical affirmation of the self-theorizations through which individuals bind and own this inherited debris. Gender without Identity should be required reading for clinicians, gender theorists, and queer and trans studies scholars alike.”  – Kadji Amin, Author of Disturbing Attachments: Genet, Modern Pederasty, and Queer History https://uitbooks.com/shop/gender-without-identity

11:45 AM – Susannah Marren whisks readers back to the world of Palm Beach with her latest novel, Maribelle’s Shadow. Listen as she provides glimpses into this great immersive read. “Another stunning novel from Susannah Marren set in Palm Beach. Exploring the intricacies and interplay of family loyalty, romance, and high society, Marren never ceases to amaze. This one will keep you turning pages!”  — Jacqueline Friedland, USA Today best-selling author of HE GETS THAT FROM ME www.susannahmarren.com

12:00 PM – Des Moines Young Artists’ Theatre presents a limited run of the coming-of-age play, The Wolves. Listen as director Charissa Hamel shares how this show will resonate with youth audiences and those seeking a candid look at the lives of that generations. https://www.dmyat.org/thewolves

12:13 PM – Michael Egel of the Des Moines Metro Opera provides a comprehensive overview of their 2023 summer season. Eclectic, powerful, appealing, this season has a wonderful schedule of operas for fans to savor. “Such high production values and careful casting make Des Moines Metro Opera a find.” – The Wall Street Journal https://desmoinesmetroopera.org/

12:33 PM – In a rare opportunity for poetry fans, Iowa hosts the National Poetry Convention & BlackBerry Peach National Poetry Slam in Des Moines: Catch Poetry: Stage & Page. Kelsey Bigelow, Co-Tournament Director, 2023 NFSPS Blackberry Peach National Poetry Slam, shares information about the many free events as well as featured events this Jun 21-25 event holds. “The National Federation of State Poetry Societies (NFSPS) is a non-profit organization, exclusively educational and literary. Its purpose is to recognize the importance of poetry with respect to national cultural heritage. It is dedicated solely to the furtherance of poetry on the national level and serves to unite poets in the bonds of fellowship and understanding.” https://nfsps.us/

12:49 PM – Executive Director and musician Dan Stevenson shares information about one of Iowa’s best musical legacies, Music Under the Stars. Listen as he shares upcoming performances at both the Iowa State Capitol and the Lauridsen Amphitheatre in Waterworks Park. “This free concert series has been a mainstay for generations, uniting people through the magic of music. These concerts become the stuff of family history, and are cultural building blocks for our community.” – The Culture Buzz https://www.musicunderthestars.org/
