Summer is not over. Just because youngsters are back-to-school shopping, summer is on for adults. Although concert season is winding down, August is still full of outdoor music concerts. Head over to West Des Moines’ Jamie Hurd Amphitheater on Sunday evenings for a laid-back vibe. Aug. 6, Stark Raving Madge; Aug. 13, Suede; and Aug. 20, Raquel and the Wallflowers. 

Whether you boat, bike, drive or walk, hear free live music this summer at Captain Roy’s, located at the Birdland Marina, overlooking the Des Moines River. Friday and Saturday evenings, from 6-9 p.m. are the Up River concerts on the outdoor “Pontune” stage. On Aug. 5, Malcom Wells & The Two Timers; Aug. 11, RhythMatics and Aug. 12, Stutterin’ Jimmy and the Goosebumps. 

The Robert Cray Band returns to Hoyt Sherman Place on Sept. 13. Cray is a five-time Grammy winner and has played the blues, soul and R&B for nearly 50 years. Tickets cost $39.50 – $59.50, available from the box office or Ticketmaster.
Will Dailey, opening act for The Wallflowers at Hoyt Sherman Place on Aug. 15, brings his 10 Dollar Song project. Tickets are still available through the Hoyt Sherman Place box office.
