Sound Notes Pick o’ the Week

The Civic Music Association will host Master Classes with Miró Quartet and percussionist Colin Currie on Saturday, April 6 at 11 a.m. as part of its Partners in Music Education Program. The Master Class for Miró Quartet will be located at the Monroe Recital Hall on the Drake University campus, while Currie will be in Sheslow Auditorium. Both Master Classes are free and open to the public. That evening, Currie and the Quartet will come together for a performance at 7:30 p.m., also in Sheslow Auditorium. Tickets to the evening concert range from $12-$36 and are available at www.midwestix.com or by contacting the Civic Music Association at 515-280-4020.

On Sunday, April 7, Java Joes hosts the Community Jazz Center’s “First Sunday of the Month Jam Session.” Area high school students perform with a professional rhythm section and special guest bassist Susie Miget. Miget will conduct an hour-long workshop for students, starting at 1 p.m., followed by the jam session from 2-4 p.m. For more information, go to www.javajoescoffeehouse.com.

On Thursday, April 4, Stutterin’ Jimmy and the Goosebumps perform down at The Underground, along with Ben Wantland. Show starts at 9 p.m., and there’s no cover.

On Friday, April 5, Vaudeville Mews welcomes novelty metal act Psychostick back to town. Tickets to the show are $15 and available in advance through www.ticketfly.com. The show gets under way at 6:45 p.m., with Polkadot Cadaver, Downtown Brown, Dark Mirror and Astral Space all opening.

Also on April 5, Parabelle plays House of Bricks in the late show, starting at 9:30 p.m. Admission is $10 at the door, and As For You and Fatal Addiction also perform.

Then on Saturday, April 6, Gas Lamp has Bright Giant, along with Enemy Planes and John June Year. That show starts at 9 p.m. and is $7 at the door.

Also on April 6, Wooly’s plays host to Green Death’s CD-release party, featuring Painface, As For You, Agrinex and Horror Business. The all-ages show starts at 7 p.m., and tickets are $10, available at www.woolysdm.com.

El Bait Shop has Crooked Mile performing on Sunday, April 7, starting at 8 p.m. No cover.

On Tuesday, April 9, the Des Moines Civic Center presents singer/songwriter Alfa, performing as part of its “Lunch Unplugged” series. Alfa performs at the Temple Theater at 12 p.m. Tickets are $8 — available through www.desmoinesperformingarts.org — with a box lunch available for an additional $8.

Sound Notes Pick o’ the Week: on Tuesday, April 9, House of Bricks welcomes Green Jelly back to down for a “Metal Puppet Show and Bake Sale.” That show kicks off at 5 p.m., is all ages and admission is free.

Also on April 9, Thankful Dirt is at el Bait Shop at 8 p.m. No cover.

Finally, on Wednesday, April 10, Vaudeville Mews and Metro Concerts Live bring in Temple, Texas, hardcore six-piece, Everyone Dies in Utah. The all-ages show kicks off at 5 p.m., and tickets are $12 through ticketfly.com. The Overseer, Bleach Blonde, The Impact of Reason and Intentions all perform as well. Mahalo. CV
