Soundnotes Pick o’ the Week

10/3/2012

The Thursday, Oct. 4, show at the Val Air Ballroom featuring heartland rock legends Kansas is, sadly, dust in the wind. For those of you who’ve already purchased your tickets for the show, refunds are being given by your point of purchase. The good folks at Val Air apologize for any disappointment and have a show scheduled for the next day to help you carry on, wayward son. See below.

Also happening on Oct. 4, Northampton, Mass., pop rockers The True Jacqueline play The Vaudeville Mews. That show kicks off at 9 p.m., and tickets are $5 at the door. Des Moines’ own Dresden Style and Liana open.

House of Bricks has a twin bill on tap for Wednesday, Oct. 5. The early show will be an all-ages event featuring Redemption Within, Slyde and Dark Mirror. That show starts at 5 p.m. and is $5 at the door.

Then in the evening, As For You and Mars on Fire join Redemption Within and Dark Mirror to rock your 21-plus socks off, starting at 9:30 p.m. $5 for that one as well.

Also on Oct. 5, the previously mentioned Val Air Ballroom presents Colt Ford, performing with Sunny Ledfurd and Crawford County. For the uninitiated, Mr. Ford is a country music rapper, which is exactly as amazing as it sounds. Hit up YouTube, search for “Colt Ford Chicken and Biscuits” and just…take it all in. Then go see the show at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance — available through www.ticketweb.com — or $25 at the door.

Soundnotes Pick o’ the Week: Saturday, Oct. 6 is the date for Gas Lamp’s second annual Pumpkin Bash. Starting at 2 p.m., the venue will be taking over the street in the name of merriment and general entertainment. DJ Eight Ten will be spinning you right ’round like a record baby all day long, in addition to live performances by Randy Burk and the Prisoners, Holy White Hounds, Humbled Soul, Dylan Sires and Neighbors, Twins, The Parlour Suite and Los Lobo Locos. Did we mention that the event is all-you-can-drink? Because it totally is. Bring a $20 bill and cancel all your plans for Sunday morning.

If none of that sounds like your bag, Oct. 6 is also the date to catch Morbid Angel at People’s. That show kicks off at 9 p.m., and tickets are $10 at the door. Dark Funeral and Grave also perform.

Vaudeville Mews opens its doors for Waterbury, CT-born hip-hopper Sketch Tha Cataclysm on Tuesday, Oct. 9. Performing on the same ticket are Botzy, Aeon Grey, Marq Divine and King Jess. Doors for the show open at 8:30 p.m., and it’ll be $5 at the door.

Then on Wednesday, Oct. 10, Wooly’s hosts Say Anything, playing with Murder By Death, The Sidekicks and Tallhart. That show will start at 7 p.m. and is all-ages. Tickets are $17 in advance and $20 at the door. Advance tickets available through www.ticketfly.com. Mahalo. CV
