Cokey G
10/17/2012‘Cokey G Is My Favorite Rapper’ BCG Records
That’s mighty presumptuous of you, Cokey G. Even though I don’t know if I’m quite ready to go out and dub Cokey G as my favorite rapper, there’s no doubt about his talent. And while this particular flavor of harder, in-your-face rap requires a level of genuineness that I’m not completely sure Cokey G possesses, he makes up for it with liberal use of guest artists most notably on tracks like “Everyday,” which the trio of Dean, T-Baby and kiz combine to absolutely crush. The album does suffer a bit from bloat: There are 18 tracks here, and it’s easy to identify where the wheat and chaff lay. Example: “The Overdose” is really solid, and “I love It” is possibly the worst song I’ve heard all year. Cut the last third off this album, and you’ve got a solid piece of work. CV
Cokey G plays The Marquee on Friday, Oct. 19 at 9 p.m. $5.
