The Des Moines Police Department is investigating the sexual assault of a 4-year-old that occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. on July 9 near 5528 Meredith Drive in Des Moines. A male suspect led the victim to a tree line behind some garages where the assault took place. The victim ran home shortly after and reported it to her mother who then called police. The victim was not physically harmed and was able to provide a limited description of the suspect: a black male wearing a white shirt and green and black shorts. Anyone who might have seen an individual in similar clothes near the area of the apartments at 5528 Meredith or 5423 Aurora is asked to contact Des Moines Detective Kelly at 515-283-1589 or The Polk County Crime Stoppers anonymously at 515-223-1400.

The DMPD also emphasizes the importance of proper and constant supervision of young children. It is important to remind children frequently about “stranger danger” and not talking or following strangers.

Blotter — Des Moines

Robbed by friend’s friend

Farmah Gweah reported that she was robbed on July 20 when she drove her friend Kenya Williams to visit Williams’ boyfriend near 1300 University Ave. When Gweah parked the car, a friend of the boyfriend came to the car and grabbed the keys from her hand. He reached in and took her purse and $300 cash from it before throwing the keys and purse back. He pulled a knife from his pocket and said “Don’t chase me,” before running northbound. At the time she reported the incident about three hours later, Gweah said Williams knew more information about the man, but Gweah could not get into contact with her at the time.

Stabbed near camp

Police were dispatched to Methodist Hospital on report of a stabbing July 21. Scott Schaff suffered a laceration to his right arm and a cut above his left eye when an unnamed began waving a kitchen steak knife back and forth in an attempt to cut Schaff, after he had escorted a female out of a homeless camp. The victim was able to defend himself with a “lantern-like flashlight” he was carrying, which he also used to hit the suspect in the face so he could run away. The suspect was last seen running north toward S.W. 16th.

Debt repaid in damages

Todd Bone of Des Moines called police after noticing his garage had been broken into on July 22. Suspects damaged the victim’s motorcycle by tipping it over, cutting the tires, breaking the tail light and prying at the ignition. When asked if Bone knew of any suspects, he told police of a phone call he received before he made the report from an acquaintance who referenced the damaged motorcycle. He stated that he had owed the acquaintance money at one time and believed the incident stems from a debt. CV
