Spina Bifida Association hosts open house

The Spina Bifida Association of Iowa will host an open house at its Urbandale office, located at 8525 Douglas Ave., Suite 39, from 5-7 p.m. on Aug. 26. The open house will welcome its first executive director, Leslie Garman, as well as share plans for the upcoming year and celebrate successes from the previous year. It will also kick off the Spina Bifida Association’s annual Walk-N-Roll fundraising event and Education Day 2015, which is planned for early spring. Call 515-278-7013 or email admin@sbaia.org.

I Work & Play opens in West Des Moines

A retail store selling occupation and recreation clothing, footwear and equipment is now open at 1308 Eighth St., Suite 1 in West Des Moines, across the street from Dunkin’ Donuts. Medical scrubs, yoga attire, construction, culinary and recreational clothing can be found at the store, as well as equipment and apparel for disc golf. The store offers free delivery in the metro and to Newton and Ames through its website. New sub shop coming to Clive

Jersey Mike’s Subs is scheduled to open its first Iowa location in early October at 12851 University Ave. in the Anglo building in Clive. Jed Hoffman and Scott Miller are the franchise owners of Jersey Mike’s and plan to open 10 of the restaurants in central Iowa in the next five years. The sub shop bakes its bread daily and serves freshly sliced meats and cheeses for its hot and cold subs. It also serves soup and salads called Sub in a Tub. You can find it on Facebook.

Iowa State Fair saw rise in DART bus ridership

Even though attendance was down at the 2014 Iowa State Fair, ridership of the DART public transit service increased by 8 percent, with an all-time high of 221,188 rides. As the second straight year of ridership growth, it shows a trend in fairgoers opting to avoid the expense and hassle of parking near the fairgrounds. “We like to think the State Fair service serves as a yearly reminder of DART’s everyday value to Greater Des Moines,” said Elizabeth Presutti, general manager of DART.

Home décor store closes in Valley Junction

Rustica Home Relics is no longer operating at its store location at 513 Elm St. in Valley Junction. After two years in the shopping district, Rustica owner Dawnrae Kuhn will continue the business out of her home. Kuhn will still offer interior and holiday decorating, merchandising and display consultations for businesses, floral design and special orders. New York-style pizza place open in West Des Moines

Taste of New York Pizza is a new pizza restaurant open in West Des Moines. Located at 165 S. Jordan Creek Parkway, Suite 160, the restaurant opened on Aug. 28 and will have its grand opening on Sept. 10. Taste of New York is family-owned and serves New York-style pizza and other authentic Italian foods, including soups, salads, pastas and desserts. The Savelli family moved from Brooklyn and desired to bring real New York food to Iowa. Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday. Hobby Lobby is going to Marshalltown

The craft store giant has announced plans to open a location in Marshalltown sometime next year, bringing 35 to 50 jobs paying $15 an hour for full-time workers and $10 for part-time. The newest Hobby Lobby will be located in the old Menards location at Marshall Town Center on 2500 S. Center St. It is about 55,000 square feet. Hobby Lobby has 14 locations in Iowa and more than 600 total. CV
