Golf and go-kart center revived in Des Moines

8/20/2014

Zip Zone, an updated outdoor fun center, is now open at 6220 Grand Ave., where Des Moines Putting and Go-Kart used to be. The business was revived by new owners with more attractions, including a bungee trampoline, sling shot water balloon game, battery-powered rides called Zippy Pets and inflatable bounce houses, along with the go-karts and mini golf. Ofir and Jordan Carmi, a father-son duo, bought the 2.1-acre lot and transformed it to the large entertainment center. Visitors can pay for individual attractions or packages with three or more activities. Zip Zone is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday; and noon to 8 p.m., Sunday. Call 515-822-4286, visit http://zipzonedsm.com or find it on Facebook. The center will be open until it is too cold to be outside, according to Jordan Carmi.

West Des Moines restaurant changes name

Champps restaurant, located in Jordan Creek Town Center, recently changed its name to Eighty Six’d and added several new items to its menu. Corporate owners of Champps suddenly terminated the franchise agreement with the mall owners. The clever new moniker is a reference to the eatery being cut from the company so quickly, said General Manager Josh Vinge. The location is still operated by a Minneapolis investment group, and it now offers pizza, tacos, burritos and pork tenderloin among other items. Hours are 11 a.m. to 2 a.m., Monday through Saturday; and 11 a.m. to midnight, Sunday. The kitchen closes at 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, midnight on Friday and Saturday, and 10 p.m. on Sunday, though the bar remains open longer. Call 515-440-6565 or find it on Facebook.
