Upscale retail center prepares to open in Waukee

The Shoppes at William Pointe, an 18,000-square-foot center, is slated to open in mid-to-late June at 1352 East Hickman Road. Businesses moving into the retail center include Louie’s Wine Dive, Polished Nail Salon and The Draught House, which is owned by Tom Baldwin Jr., who also owns 1908 Draught House in Johnston and the future Buffy’s Draught House in West Des Moines. He’s still working on personalizing the name of the Waukee location, but it will offer the same large selection of beer as the original. Louie’s Wine Dive will be bigger than its Des Moines location on University, with a private dining room for special events.

West Des Moines to be site for HomeGoods and Nordstrom

The Plaza at Jordan Creek is aiming to fill the empty stores next to Dick’s Sporting Goods in the shopping center west of Jordan Creek Town Center. HomeGoods and Nordstrom Rack are anticipated to open in the fall, filling two of the remaining three open spaces. HomeGoods is a sister store to T.J. Maxx and Marshalls and sells discount home décor, furniture and kitchen items. It is the first Iowa location for the chain. Nordstrom Rack is the discount store owned by Nordstrom Inc. and will fill a 35,000-square-foot space for its first Iowa location.

Pleasant Hill joins the CrossFit craze

The popular workout that combines gymnastics, Olympic weight lifting and cardio conditioning for one intense fitness regimen has opened doors at the Pleasant Hill Orange Planet sports complex. Jeremiah Long, Jess Stillmunkes and Andy Harmsen are trainers and co-owners of the new CrossFit. Long said CrossFit is one of the fastest-growing workouts for fitness enthusiasts. Declining sales cause closings for local Long John Silver’s

The familiar seafood restaurants closed locations in West Des Moines, Des Moines and Ankeny in early June. Long John Silver’s closed at 4500 Fleur Drive, 850 First St. and 209 S. Ankeny Blvd. But don’t worry: you can still get your seafood fix at two locations in Des Moines (East University St. and Southeast Fourteenth St.) and in Urbandale (Douglas Avenue). Nellis Management Group in Urbandale is the franchise holder for the restaurant, and it is closing 16 of its 31 franchises in Iowa, Arizona, Illinois and South Dakota. Nellis will sell or lease its owned locations.

Education center changes West Des Moines locations

Kumon Math & Reading Center moved from its previous location at 1959 Grand Ave. to a space about double the size at 5934 Ashworth Road. Center Director Kay Sinha said the office has greater visibility and better parking, as well as being closer to its clients. The after-school independent math and reading program was founded in 1958 in Japan. Kumon’s West Des Moines branch was opened in 2000 and a Johnston location in 2006 at 5800 Merle Hay Road. Classes are held 3-7 p.m. Monday and Thursday in West Des Moines, and 4-7 p.m. Tuesday and Saturday in Johnston. Call 515-225-8666 or visit www.kumon.com.

Alternative roofing company opens in Des Moines

Killian’s Custom Metal Roofing & Panel manufactures 3-foot-wide metal panels for pole barns, sheds, garages, metal buildings and residential roofing, in addition to stock trim. After 16 years of experience in the steel panel and trim manufacturing industry, Paula Killian started the business now located at 630 S.E. 15th St. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Bruegger’s Bagels reopens Kaleidoscope Bakery

The popular breakfast bakery reopened at its 655 Walnut St. location on June 12. It had been closed since the former Younkers building caught fire on March 29, causing significant damage to much of the property. Doors opened for Bruegger’s at 5:30 that morning in the Kaleidoscope Mall. The bakery only received minor smoke damage in the fire, and it will operate at full capacity, with fresh bagels and signature coffees made fresh every day.
