Funding will assist with expenses related to training and veterinary assistance.

DES MOINES, IA – Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) has been awarded a $48,632 grant from the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) to offer preventative assistance to horse owners in need and expand support for medically or behaviorally challenged horses. The grant will help the ARL’s Second Chance Ranch fund the Equine Managed Admissions Program which provides essential lifesaving services including financial assistance for veterinary care to help horses stay in their homes and needed training and socialization for horses relinquished to the Second Chance Ranch. These are crucial resources to ARL’s Second Chance Ranch operations and efforts to help equine owners and vulnerable equines in our community.

“The ARL has been helping horses in need, who were victims of abuse or neglect (and barn animals) since our Second Chance Ranch opened in 2008. Thanks to this grant we are eager to help more horse owners and owned horses through our Equine Managed Admissions Program.” said Tom Colvin, Chief Executive Officer of the Animal Rescue League of Iowa. “This generous grant from the ASPCA will provide funding for training of the horses in our care and veterinary assistance for owned horses in our community who are most vulnerable as we work towards a positive impact for the horses, their families, and our community.”

“The ARL continues to make great strides in improving equine welfare in Iowa by encouraging equine adoption, caring for horses that need additional medical or behavioral support and providing vital services to horse owners,” said Christie Schulte Kappert of the ASPCA Equine Welfare Department. “We are proud to partner with ARL through the ASPCA Right Horse program, and we are pleased to support them as they create better access to critical resources within their community.”

Through the ARL’s Second Chance Ranch Managed Admissions program the ARL will work to help owned horses in that are at-risk of neglect, abandonment, or ending up at auction. By proactively offering care at home, or a safe place to land, this program will ensure Iowa horses receive support before the situation becomes dire.
