CCC Board President Receives Iowa Governor’s Volunteer Award

6/22/2022

Johnston, Iowa — Children’s Cancer Connection (CCC) congratulates its Board President Julie Anderson-Suddarth, MD for receiving the Iowa Governor’s Volunteer Award. The Iowa Governor’s Volunteer Award (GVA) program honors the dedicated people who volunteer time and talent to help an agency or organization deliver on its mission. This year’s awards were presented by Gov. Kim Reynolds and Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg on June 21 at a ceremony held at SE Polk High School.

“I am overwhelmed by this honor, especially because Children’s Cancer Connection means so much to me,” said Dr. Anderson-Suddarth. “The support the organization provides for children and families affected by childhood cancers across the state is so important and needed. Being a part of that support, whether it is on the Board, providing medical care at camp or helping with other fundraising activities, is something I truly cherish.”

Dr. Anderson-Suddarth is a Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Pediatric Sedation Physician at Blank Children’s Hospital, UnityPoint Health Des Moines, where she also serves as Pediatric Department Chair. She treats sick or injured children in the emergency department and helps sedate them for procedures. She joined the CCC Board of Directors in 2019 and became Board President in 2021.

“Julie is a true servant leader, helping in every aspect of the organization from revising bylaws to helping secure donations and more,” said CCC CEO Jennifer Hines. “She goes above and beyond in her service to CCC and in her care for the children and families we serve. She is an amazing individual and is highly deserving of this honor.”

Dr. Anderson-Suddarth serves on CCC’s Medical Advisory Team, and her guidance was invaluable throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Through her connections in the medical community, she has also helped Children’s Cancer Connection strengthen its relationships with both Blank Children’s Hospital and the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.

Under Dr. Anderson-Suddarth’s leadership, the CCC Board has expanded to include members from across the state of Iowa, in order to provide leadership representation from the entire geographic region which is served by CCC.
