Shakespeare on the Lawn at Salisbury House presents “Taming of the Shrew”

5/5/2017

DES MOINES, IA (May 2017) – Salisbury House Foundation is pleased to present Shakespeare on the Lawn at Salisbury House on June 15-18, 2017. The Repertory Theater of Iowa will perform William Shakespeare’s comedy, Taming of the Shrew, with the majestic backdrop of Salisbury House as a stage. Nightly performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. with gates opening at 6:30 p.m. for seating. Chairs will be provided but guests are also welcome to bring picnic baskets, blankets, and bag chairs.

William Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew” is a hilarious battle of the sexes telling the story of two sisters and their affections and woes in courtships. The beautiful and gentle Bianca has no shortage of admirers but her assertive and willful sister, Katherina, is deemed unworthy to suitors. Their father insists Bianca will not marry until her shrewish sister is betrothed. Katherina meets her match when the haughty bachelor, Petruchio, takes her for his bride. The couple’s verbal sparring and physical battles beg the ultimate question of just who is taming whom.
