“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” swings into theaters with an ultimate cinematic experience that is nothing short of spectacular. This animated superhero extravaganza, directed by the brilliant minds of Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson, not only lives up to the high standards set by its predecessor but takes the Miles Morales saga to exhilarating new heights.

From the very beginning, the animation style of “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” is a feast for the eyes. The vibrant colors, meticulous attention to detail and seamless blending of different art styles create a visual spectacle that sets it apart from other animated films. The action sequences are exhilarating, and the animation techniques employed to showcase the various Spider-Verses are both inventive and visually striking.

The story picks up where the first film left off, with Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) taking on the mantle of Spider-Man with appropriate swagger. However, this time he finds himself journeying across the multiverse (re: Spider-Verse), confronting a cavalcade of Spider-Men of every variety along the way.

One of the film’s greatest strengths lies in its ability to tackle complex themes with subtlety and nuance. It explores the concept of identity, not only through the lens of being Miles Morales but also through the experiences of many other Spider-Men who maintain many different motivations depending on their backgrounds and dimensions.

The chemistry between the characters shines through, and the addition of new Spider-Verse heroes adds an exciting dynamic to the ensemble. Each character is given his moment to shine, and the interactions between them are often humorous and heartfelt.

The action sequences are a true spectacle to behold. From gravity-defying acrobatics to intense battles against formidable foes, the animation seamlessly blends different art styles and techniques to create a dynamic and visually stunning experience. Each action sequence is meticulously choreographed without the spastic cuts most commonly associated with the MCU.

The film’s soundtrack is an absolute triumph, featuring an eclectic mix of genres that perfectly complement the on-screen action. From hip-hop beats to soaring orchestral melodies, the music enhances every scene and injects the film with an infectious energy that keeps the audience fully immersed and elevates the excitement to another level.

SPOILER WARNING:

While the film excels in many aspects, the ending leaves something to be desired for some viewers. It concludes with a cliffhanger and a “to be continued” message, hinting at future installments in the Spider-Verse saga. While this approach can build anticipation and excitement for what’s to come, it also leaves the audience longing for a more satisfying conclusion within the film itself. Some viewers may find themselves yearning for a more resolved ending that ties up loose ends and provides a sense of closure. (After all, not a single plot point is resolved in this installment, leaving this reviewer wondering if he should have waited until March 2024 to watch when the third film is expected to be released so he could have some resolution.)

Despite this, the film’s strengths outweigh its shortcomings. The action-packed sequences, emotional depth, and captivating visuals make “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” a worthy addition to the Spider-Man franchise. It pushes boundaries, breaks conventions, and invites viewers of all ages to embark on an exhilarating and emotional journey.

Prepare to be captivated, inspired and amazed as “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” takes you on a mind-bending adventure that will reaffirm your love for the web-slinger and leave you longing for more. Fans of Spider-Man (or animation enthusiasts) will find themselves immersed in this web-slinging adventure that sets the stage for exciting things to come.
