“Madam Web”

PG-13 | 116 minutes
Director: S.J. Clarkson
Writers: Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless, Claire Parker
Stars: Dakota Johnson,  Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced

“Meanwhile, in another universe…”

A reality separate from the sacred timeline of the MCU, “Madam Web” promises to deliver less of a typical superhero movie than a suspense-driven thriller.

In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines. Dakota Johnson stars as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures … if they can all survive a deadly present.

“Lisa Frankenstein”

PG-13 | 101 minutes
Director: Zelda Williams
Writer: Diablo Cody
Stars: Kathryn Newton, Liza Soberano, Jenna Davis

Focus Features’ Lisa Frankenstein. A teen rom-com by way of Edward Scissorhands and Sweeney Todd, the story follows the very complicated existence of Goth misfit, Lisa Swallow (Kathryn Newton), at both home and high school. When she’s gifted the man of her dreams via some very sketchy means, Lisa comes out of her shell.

Featuring the tagline, “a coming of RAGE love story,” Lisa Frankenstein is an ode to the 1980s and those Goths that never quite fit into the mainstream. From the mind of screenwriter Diablo Cody, Lisa Frankenstein is a misunderstood teen facing a lot of life changes. She’s a loner who spends most of her time in a graveyard daydreaming about a dead prince charming (Cole Sprouse). After a set of playfully horrific circumstances bring him back to life, the two embark on a murderous journey to find love, happiness… and a few missing body parts along the way.

“Argylle”

PG-13 | 139 minutes
Director: Matthew Vaughn
Writer: Jason Fuchs
Stars: Sofia Boutella, Henry Cavill, Dua Lipa

“Argylle” concerns Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard), an introverted spy novelist who seldom leaves her home. A very unassuming lady, Conway’s life is thrown into chaos when she is drawn into the real world of espionage and the plots of her books get a little too close to the activities of a sinister underground syndicate. When Aiden (Sam Rockwell), a spy, shows up to save her (he says) from being kidnapped or killed (or both), Elly and her beloved cat Alfie are plunged into a covert world where nothing, and no one, is what it seems. Turns out her books have aligned with actual elements of real spy missions, and that’s caught the interest of many interested parties, including a villainous figure played by Bryan Cranston. ♦
