Belly Up To...

Experience the beer of Iowa

10/28/2015

When avid beer lover and WOI-TV meteorologist J.D. Peterson found that a brewery tour didn’t exist in central Iowa, he began researching and contacting Iowa breweries to change that. Iowa Brew Tours was launched Oct. 1 in hopes of providing an educational tour of central Iowa breweries for local beer lovers.

Iowa Brew Tours offers a range of opportunities for beer lovers and those wanting to learn more about Iowa breweries.

Peterson started his brewery tour after realizing two things: Iowa’s brewery industry is blowing up (there are 15 breweries and counting in the Des Moines area), and there was no one else doing this sort of thing in the area. He started contacting breweries this past summer and is currently working with Firetrucker Brewery, Peace Tree Brewing Co., Madhouse Brewing Co., El Bait Shop, Fong’s Pizza, Hessen Haus, High Life Lounge, The Royal Mile, University Library Café, The Red Monk, Confluence Brewing Company and Exile Brewing Company. Peterson plans to expand the tour eventually, but he says he just hasn’t had the time to reach out to every brewery in Iowa yet.

belly up-JDVersatility is at the heart of the Iowa Brew Tours, offering guests the ability to choose from different options such as the breweries they visit and whether they take public or private tours.

At a starting cost of $55 per person, guests travel to three different breweries in the metro area and are provided with free drinks at all three breweries, which are often suggested by guests. Usually starting and ending at El Bait Shop, guests are allowed the choice of one pint or a four- to five-beer tasting flight at each bar.

Private tours are also offered in the tour’s 14-passenger van at a rate of $115 per hour with a three-hour minimum. The private tour provides transportation services for one party and the opportunity to decide where the tour will go.

Special tours such as the Peace Tree Brewery Experience will also be offered for guests. This tour will bring guests to Knoxville for a BYOB ride to Peace Tree Brewery. Guests will get a VIP experience and features including a reserved table in the tasting room, bar snacks, six-beer tasting flight, the guest’s choice of a pint of one standard beer or a half-pint of a high-gravity beer, and a full brewery tour.belly up

Other specials will be offered throughout the year as business grows and as opportunities present themselves to the Iowa Brew Tours and breweries across the state.

With high versatility and many options for guests, Iowa Brew Tours offers a fun, educational and safe night out. Online booking is offered at www.iowabrewtours.com. Halloween weekend is full, and November is filling up fast, so get your tickets while they’re still available. Went on one of these tours a few weeks back. Very unique and fun seeing all the breweries. Turned it into a date night with the Mrs. and we both had a blast. Worth giving it a try.
