Jingle bells rock

12/2/2015

When it comes to the holidays, it’s not about how you celebrate but whom you’re celebrating with. The holidays are a time that should simply be spent with the people who matter most in your life: your friends, family and loved ones. With all the traveling and packed car rides that come with the holiday season, how about taking a little time to get out and move around a bit? It may even help make room for seconds and thirds come dinnertime.

Jingle Bell Rock ‘n Run 5K will take place Dec. 6 at the Science Center of Iowa.

We all know the best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing aloud for all to hear. The next best way to kick off the holiday season is with the Science Center of Iowa (SCI) Jingle Bell Rock ‘n Run 5K. Don your most festive attire as you dash through downtown Des Moines with hundreds of other Santas, Rudolphs, Frostys and many other merry characters.

“The run used to be timed, but we made a decision to focus on the fun and costumes more than the competitive aspects of a race,” said Emilee Richardson, marketing and communications manager at SCI. “We’ve seen more families participating in the last few years, too.”

As the first snow continues to melt away, the forecast for race weekend (at the time of this writing) appears to be tame. Hopefully this means a few more people and a lot less slipping on the snow.

“We’ve seen a variety of runners — from serious athletes to families looking for something fun and physical to do together,” Richardson said. “With it just being a 5K, it’s accessible to all kinds of runners and walkers. And because it’s not a timed race, we’ve seen more attendance from people who want to dress up and have a good time.”

Each runner will receive an SCI stocking cap and goodie bag from a sponsor. In addition, after the run, participants and spectators are treated to a hot breakfast (“think eggs, bacon, potatoes… all the good stuff”) and warm drinks. Brother Trucker also will be playing a live concert, and prizes will be awarded for the most festively dressed male, female, child and group.

“Dress in layers, but remember that we’ll have a hat for you,” Richardson said. “And keep an eye on the prize: hot breakfast and warm drinks when you cross the finish line.”

While registration is available on race day, Richardson said it’s preferred that people register by Friday, Dec. 4, so they can appropriately plan ahead. The same goes for you.

“In addition to some physical conditioning, start working on your costumes,” she said. “We love seeing the creativity that some participants come up with, and it really adds to the feel of the event when people get into it.” CV
