Courtesan Violetta Valery, played by soprano Caitlin Lynch of Detroit, Mich., lifts a glass of champagne as she hosts a party at her home in the opening act of the Des Moines Metro Opera’s production of La Traviata. Violetta is suffering from consumption and has vowed to live the rest of her life seeking pleasure.
