DMPS CELEBRATES GROUNDBREAKING FOR STUDEBAKER ELEMENTARY CLASSROOM ADDITION

Des Moines Public Schools celebrated the start of a new classroom addition at Studebaker Elementary School during a groundbreaking ceremony on October 5.

Students, families, staff, district leaders and construction partners gathered at the school to mark another milestone in the district’s Reimagining Education facility investments. The Studebaker project is funded through the statewide SAVE program and will add classroom space to support students and staff.

“When we invest in the places where students learn, we send a clear message that they matter and that their future matters,” said Superintendent Matt Smith. “This addition will give the Studebaker community more space to learn, collaborate and grow together.”

The Studebaker groundbreaking follows the district’s June groundbreaking ceremonies for construction projects at Brody, McCombs, Goodrell and Weeks middle schools. Together, the projects reflect DMPS’s continued work to align facilities with student needs and future programming.

“Studebaker is a strong school community, and today’s celebration is about building on that strength,” said Principal Brian Crook. “We are grateful to our staff, families, district partners and community members who helped bring this project to this point.”

Dr. Bekah Harris, lead project manager for Reimagining Education, said the ceremony represents continued progress as long-term plans move into implementation.

“Each construction milestone makes the future of Reimagining Education more visible,” Harris said. “This classroom addition is another example of the district following through on its commitment to create learning environments where students have the space to grow together.”

The ceremony included remarks from school and district leaders followed by a ceremonial first turn of dirt with students and project partners.
