Greater Des Moines Supportive Housing will bring nearly 200 units of permanent supportive housing to the region.

DES MOINES, Iowa – August 10, 2026 – Greater Des Moines Supportive Housing (GDMSH) announced the closing on two former extended stay hotels that will become an 89-unit campus at 2701 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines and a 104-unit campus at 3940 114^th Street in Urbandale. Both cities gave unanimous approval to the projects this summer, marking the completion of a five-year effort to bring new units of permanent supportive housing to the region.

Together, these campuses will provide stable, long-term homes and supportive services for nearly 200 individuals experiencing homelessness or housing instability in Polk County.

The Blueprint to Reduce Homelessness in Polk County, released as a community-wide plan, identifies GDMSH’s model as central to reducing homelessness across the region – preventing people from losing housing, expanding specialized services, and adding new units of supportive housing. GDMSH’s team and Board of Directors have more than 60 years of combined experience in the housing arena plus expertise in social work, nonprofit administration, real estate, finance, law, insurance, and marketing.

Residents will have access to:

• Fully furnished studio apartments with kitchenettes and bathrooms, offering a comfortable and dignified living space
• Community spaces and recreational areas that foster belonging and social connection
• On-site support services, including case management, counseling, and life skills training
• Essential amenities, including a food pantry, commercial kitchen, dining area, fitness center, adult classrooms, and green space

Both campuses will prioritize safety with controlled access and 24-hour staffing.

GDMSH will begin renovation work this fall and expects to welcome residents in late 2027.  Combined project costs for both campuses are estimated at $29 million, funded through a combination of private and public sources, including a capital campaign now underway.
