Quote of the Week –
“I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy. My sons ought to study mathematics and philosophy, geography, natural history, naval architecture, navigation, commerce, and agriculture, in order to give their children a right to study painting, poetry, music, architecture, statuary, tapestry, and porcelain.”
—John Adams (1735-1826), the second President of the United States, serving from 1797 to 1801. He was a Founding Father, a diplomat, and a lawyer before becoming president.

II. This week’s guests on The Culture Buzz –
11:00 AM – Tiffany D. Jackson, author and filmmaker, delivers a captivating new perspective into the world of Cape Cod in her new thriller, Blood in the Water. Listen as she shares glimpses into this wonderful middle school novel – something that anyone of any age will enjoy.
“Jackson once again proves her brilliance at weaving suspense, heart, and truth into a story that refuses to let go… A masterful middle-grade mystery that challenges, entertains, and lingers long after the final page.”
— School Library Journal, starred review
https://www.writeinbk.com/
11:18 AM – Mardell Hogan Plainfeather worked with scholar Barbara Loeb in crafting Mardell’ mother’s stories into an entrancing collection of deeply resonating tales from Lillian Bullshows Hogan. This a lyricism and artistry that transcends, Mardell and Barbara capture the voice and magic of Lillian as she recounts a life that spanned the entire 20th century.
“This fascinating book is part autobiography, part history, part memoir, part cultural guide, and part poetry. . . . Loeb and Plainfeather made the wise decision to adopt an ethnopoetic approach to the reminiscences, thus preserving not only Lillian’s words but also the rhythm and structure of her speaking. This choice elevates the book. The stories themselves are interesting, but the preservation of oral performance lends an intimate and important cultural feel to the work.”

On the south side of the Winterset square, the Iowa Quilt Museum’s current exhibit, “Tiny Pieces, Vast Visions,” features four quiltmakers who share a creative bond. They each bring their own aesthetic to their work, but all use tiny pieces of fabric to create larger patterns. Small pieces come together to tell unique visual stories throughout their work, resulting in one-of-a-kind pieces of quilted artwork. The show remains through Aug. 3
