The imminent arrival of Romelu Lukaku seriously increases competition for places in the Chelsea forward line, which means there is added incentive for the likes of Hakim Ziyech, Kai Havertz and Timo Werner in tonight’s UEFA Super Cup clash with Villarreal.

One of those three looks likely to be edged out to make room for Lukaku but for now, that trio of second-season attackers have their chance to shine and it’s an opportunity that needs to be taken.

The acquisition of Lukaku ramps up expectations of Thomas Tuchel’s side this season, both domestically and in Europe. PSG might be everyone’s new favourites to win the Champions League but don’t expect Chelsea to give the trophy up lightly, whilst at the same time mounting a serious title challenge on the domestic front. They certainly have the squad to compete on both fronts, both in terms of depth and quality.

Tammy Abraham has travelled with the squad to Belfast despite being strongly linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge as he searches for more game time.

Tuchel told Chelsea TV: ‘Tammy is available, he is here with us and he is in the squad.

‘What I will say about Tammy is that he did some good preparation matches, he was clearly not happy with how much he played in the last half year or so and maybe he has reason not to be happy with that.

‘Maybe it was also my fault not to push him or trust him as much other players, and I can absolutely understand that he wants more minutes.’

Tuchel’s side are red hot favourites to bag their first silverware of the season against Villarreal, who booked their place in this tie with a penalty shoot-out victory over Manchester United in the Europa League Final.
