Bellator Heavyweight World Champion Ryan Bader is on a mission to recapture the light heavyweight crown that recently escaped him in his previous outing against reigning light heavyweight champ Vadim Nemkov, but first he must get past a man he knows very well, one of the greatest strikers of all time, Lyoto Machida. Bader has waited over eight years to avenge the knockout loss at the hands of “The Dragon”, and this time the stakes couldn’t be higher.
With victories over some the best fighters of all time such as Gegard Mousasi, Randy Couture, Dan Henderson, Vitor Belfort and Tito Ortiz, former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida came to Bellator with the goal of capturing the light heavyweight title and further solidifying his status as one one the all-time greatest. The ultra elusive and explosive striker will be looking to repeat his knockout performance in his previous fight with Ryan Bader on his way to entering the tournament semifinals.
Machida and Bader first met in the UFC in 2012, with Machida coming away with the win via second-round knockout. Now nine years later, Bader will look to avenge his loss and move forward in the tournament in an effort to get his light heavyweight title back. Bader is coming off his first loss in over five years after he lost his world title to Vadim Nemkov at Bellator 244. Machida is certainly in need of a win here, not only to advance in the tournament, but to avoid going 0-3 in his last three bouts. Machida is coming off back-to-back split decision losses to Gegard Mousasi and Phil Davis.
Also on the main card is the return of both Cat Zingano and Liz Carmouche, as well as a solid featherweight matchup between Jeremy Kennedy and Adam Borics.

Machida could very well be fighting for his job in this grand prix as he is 42-years-old and on a two-fight losing skid and hasn’t been putting on the most exciting fights lately. Bader, meanwhile, looked terrible against Nemkov in his first fight back at light heavyweight since 2017.
In the fight, there is no question what Bader’s game plan will be and that will wrestle Machida early and often. The Brazilian is known for his karate striking style, which could pose some problems for Bader if he can’t take the former UFC champ down.
I don’t expect this fight to be very competitive at all. Bader should be able to take Machida down at will and I also worry about Machida’s cardio to go five rounds as he hasn’t fought a five-round fight since 2018.
Although Bader does have KO power and is a good striker, I don’t think he will want to stand and trade with Machida. He was caught trading with Nemkov in his last fight and got knocked out. In the grand prix as well, you have to remain healthy, and Bader knows that after going through the heavyweight grand prix.
I expect Bader to just wrestle Machida early and often and eventually earn a ground and pound TKO in the middle rounds of the fight.
The co-main event is a women’s MMA battle, featuring No. 2 ranked flyweight Liz Carmouche (14-7) up against Vanessa Porto (22-8). The full Bellator 256 fight card can be found below.
