Simpson College Community Orchestra Concert

December 5 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

The Simpson College Community Orchestra will present its fall concert on Sunday, December 5th, at 7:00 pm in the Blank Performing Arts Center. The hour-long concert will feature pieces by Lully, Mendelssohn, Vaughan Williams, and Mozart. Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend. Families are welcome. Masks are required.

This is the orchestra’s first performance open to the general public since the beginning of the pandemic. The orchestra members welcome the opportunity to play again for a responsive audience. Music is an art form which is better shared.

The concert will feature Mozart’s famous Symphony #40. Composed in 1788, the year in which his daughter Theresia died, it is one of only two symphonies he wrote in minor keys.

The audience will experience Lully’s “March for the Turkish Ceremony” as would audiences from the period. Dr. Eckerty will conduct the piece using a long conducting staff. Such a staff is one with which Lully struck his foot while conducting his Te Deum, and which caused the gangrene leading to his death.

The full spectrum of emotions will be reflected in the music of this concert. Mendelssohn’s rollicking String Symphony #7 will delight with its melody full of leaps and eighth-notes. Vaughan Williams’ serene “Sprig of Thyme” and “Lark in the Morning” will soothe and replenish the spirit.

Please join the orchestra for an evening of musical offerings meant for communal enjoyment.
