The former Alabama quarterback’s stock enjoyed a meteoric rise in the lead up to the NFL Draft back in April, when Jones was widely regarded as a shoo-in to be selected by the San Francisco 49ers with the third overall pick.

The 49ers picked North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance instead, with Jones falling all the way down to No. 15, where he was picked up by the Patriots.
Jones is the first quarterback the franchise has selected in the first-round of the draft since Bill Belichick first took charge of the Patriots two decades ago.

Despite being less athletic than the four quarterbacks selected ahead of him in the first round, Jones has all the traits of a quarterback who could thrive in Belichick’s offense. A pocket passer who reads the game well, he passed for 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns and four picks last year, completing 77.4 percent of his passes.
Washington Football Team at New England Patriots odds, picks and prediction

The Washington Football Team and New England Patriots kick off Week 1 of the preseason on Thursday, their first game action of the year. Kickoff from Gillette Stadium is at 7:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Washington vs. Patriots odds and lines, and make our best NFL picks, predictions and bets.

Washington enters this season seeking its second straight NFC East title after winning the division in narrow fashion last year. QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is expected to be the starter although he’ll face some competition from QB Taylor Heinicke. The defense is where the strength of this team truly lies as they have a defensive front that rivals any in the NFL.

The Patriots are still searching for a starting quarterback of their own. QB Cam Newton and QB Mac Jones are both expected to play against Washington. It will mark the first time Jones takes the field in an NFL game – even if it is just a preseason game. CB Stephon Gilmore won’t play in this one, but New England’s defense is still formidable.
The first preseason game is always a little bit sloppy, especially with backups and reserves handling the bulk of the snaps. Washington’s roster is a little bit deeper than the Patriots’, so I feel more confident in the road team coming in and grabbing a win over New England.

Bet WASHINGTON (-105) to win outright against the Patriots, who are going to have trouble keeping their quarterbacks upright.

Against the spread
Washington has the edge at quarterback in this one assuming Fitzpatrick and Heinicke both play. Fitzpatrick will be aggressive throwing the ball, while Heinicke will get the chance to show off his athleticism as a runner.

I like WASHINGTON +1.5 (-115) to win outright and in turn cover the spread, with its defense stymying New England’s offense.

Over/Under
It’s always difficult to predict what the score line is going to be in the preseason, especially in Week 1. However, with rust being knocked off and players attempting to find their footing this shouldn’t be a high-scoring game in Foxborough.
New England Patriots vs Washington Football Team Schedule, TV, Radio, Online Streaming, Odds, and more
The Washington Football Team’s 2021 season starts tonight with a preseason game in New England against the Patriots. This will be the WFT’s first preseason game since the name change. Last year’s preseason was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ron Rivera wants to see Ryan Fitzpatrick take command of the offense tonight, and said no one has been ruled out for playing the Patriots. He emphasized the sense of urgency everyone should have this week with their first real game action since the playoff loss to the Super Bowl Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers in January. Rivera wants to see consistency and communication on the field.
Patriots vs. Washington 2021 live stream: Time, TV schedule and how to watch online
The New England Patriots will kick off their 2021 preseason with a home matchup against the Washington Football Team.

This will be the first game the Patriots have fans in Gillette Stadium since the 2019 postseason against the Tennessee Titans. Cam Newton and Mac Jones will continue to battle for the starting role as the preseason begins. Newton is coming off an underwhelming season, mostly due to a myriad of difficult circumstances. Jones, who was drafted with pick No. 15, appears to be pro-ready and will see his first bit of NFL action.

The Football Team will feature Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback with Kyle Allen and Taylor Heinicke coming off the bench behind him. Washington’s defense is much stronger than its offense and the Patriots will be prepared for a unit that averaged 2.9 sacks in 2020.
Primed for Patriots Preseason: Three to Watch on Offense vs. Washington
As the New England Patriots prepare to host the Washington Football Team in their first preseason game of 2021, Patriot Maven highlights three offensive players on whom Pats fans might want to keep a sharp eye.
The New England Patriots are set to open their 2021 preseason slate on Thursday, August 12 at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro Massachusetts. The Pats will welcome the Washington Football Team for the first, and only preseason contest to be held in New England this summer. With an expected capacity crowd to cheer on the hometown team, the Pats will continue to use each opportunity to learn, improve and prepare for the upcoming 2021 season.

Though many Patriots players are expected to garner some attention during Thursday’s matchup, here are three players that might raise an eyebrow… or perhaps, catch a ‘sharp eye’ when the Pats take the field against Washington.

Mac Jones
The collective eyes of Patriots fandom, and media, will likely be focused on Jones when the Patriots take the field on Thursday. While there is still a degree of uncertainty regarding whether projected starter Cam Newton will make an appearance in this game, the rookie is expected to see a great deal of action. Jones has been quite impressive, thus far, in training camp. The 22 year-old has consistently demonstrated both poise and control. His quick-release, along with the ability to process plays in a timely and accurate manner has garnered the attention of fans and media alike. Still, Jones has yet to do so in a game setting. Truth be told, he has yet to be hit within an NFL environment. With Washington head coach Ron Rivera advising that he will be playing his starters on Thursday, Jones should get a good look at one of the NFL’s most formidable front sevens. One of the rookie’s strengths is fluid movement within the pocket. He will need to pull upon those skills if he hopes to evade a potent Washington pass rush.

How to watch, listen, stream Washington vs. Patriots in preseason Week 1
The Washington Football Team opens up the 2021 preseason on Thursday with a trip to Foxboro to face the New England Patriots.

Washington enters the preseason opener intending to play its starters. Head coach Ron Rivera didn’t say how long the starters would play, but he detailed what he was looking for from his quarterbacks.
Is he going through the checks, the processes he needs to?” Rivera said Tuesday. “When I’m done, I’m going to take a look and see what the playbook tells us, whether or not we spread the ball around properly and we used all of our assets out there.”

While most of Washington’s roster is set, there are still several battles to be won this preseason. Wide receiver, defensive back, defensive end, and the offensive line are some positions to watch for Washington on Thursday night.

The Football Team will be playing Rivera’s former franchise quarterback in Carolina, Cam Newton. Washington will also see plenty of New England’s first-round quarterback, Mac Jones.
The New England Patriots will open the 2021 preseason against the Washington Football Team and play in front of the Gillette Stadium fans for the first time since the 2019 postseason when they faced the Tennessee Titans in an AFC Wild Card Game on Jan. 4, 2020. The NFL did not play a preseason last year and the Patriots did not have fans in the stands in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Patriots will face Washington in the preseason for the 23rd time, tying the Philadelphia Eagles for the second-most frequent preseason opponent. The Patriots have faced the New York Giants 29. The Giants and Eagles are the Patriots other 2021 preseason opponents.
