Two new managers are looking for their first piece of silverware
Marco Rose and Julian Nagelsmann will be looking to lift their first trophy with their new club as the two great powers of modern German football face off in the DFL-Supercup. Bayern Munich are looking to win their fifth title in six years with Borussia Dortmund having been their victims in three of those victories.
Both teams head into this game battling an injury crisis in their defense. With Erling Haaland and Robert Lewandowski having started the new season as they ended the last, scoring goals and menacing defenders, the Supercup could prove to be a thrilling attacking shootout. Here’s how you can watch the match and what you need to know:

Dortmund: A thumping 5-2 win over Eintracht Frankfurt was as good a way as any for Marco Rose to start life in the Dortmund dugout with Haaland at his marauding best in the victory. it was not the goals — they are rather par for the cause where the young striker is concerned — that caught the eye but instead the brace of assists, as many as he provided in his first half season in Germany.
Both were rather similar, Haaland picking the ball up in midfield, driving at a defense that expects him to shoot and then laying it off to a teammate in space to thump home. Having registered half of his six Bundesliga assists last season from April onwards defenders might start worrying that this remorseless scorer is adding new strings to his bow. You would not confuse him for Kevin De Bruyne but the sheer gravity of Haaland means that on occasions he only needs to make relatively simple passes to unlock defenses that are far more concerned about his shooting prowess.
Bayern Munich: Does it matter that Julian Nagelsmann hasn’t won a game, competitive or otherwise, from the five he has managed so far? Certainly it will become something more of an issue if Bayern follow their 1-1 draw against Borussia Monchengladbach with a defeat to Dortmund.
Nagelsmann might point to the fact that his side is weaker this season than he was last. Jerome Boateng and David Alaba have left the center of the Bayern defense, replaced only by Dayot Upamecano. With Benjamin Pavard unavailable for the Gladbach draw Josip Stansic had to step in for his second senior game. Though he performed well, a new manager would surely want more experienced options at the back.
Though Bayern may be stronger on paper Dortmund’s form augurs well and with a home crowd on their side that may be enough to see them to victory. PICK: Dortmund 2, Bayern 1
