NFL super
bowl
By Game Day
Super Bowl XLIII
Feb. 1, 5 p.m.
Tampa, Fla.
Pittsburgh Steelers
vs. Arizona Cardinals
By Darren Tromblay
 If
someone — no, make that anyone,
including JC Himself — would have
told Game Day that the Arizona
Cardinals would be playing in
the Super Bowl, well, we would’ve
likely made “doody in our Dickies”
with laughter. As fate would have
it, sure as caca, here they are,
the Arizona Cardinals, one step
away from being crowned world
champions. On the other side of
the ledger stands the Pittsburgh
Steelers, fresh off a 23-14 victory
over Baltimore in the AFC title
game. While the Steel Curtain
has the Big Game experience and
the defense, it’s Arizona who
has Kurt, Fitz and the 12th Man
in the Sky. We’re going Joe Namath
on this one.

Who would have thought at the
beginning of the season the Arizona
Cardinals would be playing in
the Super Bowl? And if you did
have faith the Cardinals would
be on the big stage, did you really
think retired grocery bagger Kurt
Warner would be at the helm? Neither
did I, but through some sort of
miracle (call him Larry “a man
among boys” Fitzgerald), the Cardinals
are playing in their first Super
Bowl since, well, forever. Congrats,
but the fun ends here. Arizona’s
running game has been hit or miss
and that’s simply not good enough
against the tough Steelers defense.
Sure the Cardinals have some amazing
receivers, but Warner has not
passed all over a safety the caliber
of Troy Polamalu. The blitzes
will be non-stop and along with
Ike Taylor, hard-hitting Ryan
Clarke and DeShea Townsend, Arizona’s
highly touted passing offense
will look like every other passer
going against the Steelers this
year — ridiculous.

I know Iowans are flying high
for quarterback and Iowa native
Kurt Warner as he has propelled
the new-look Arizona Cardinals
to Super Bowl XLIII. And fittingly
so. Warner, appearing in his third
Super Bowl, has proven he’s not
a product of the system as many
say he was in St. Louis. The veteran
and should-be-hall-of-famer has
lit up the scoreboard with an
aerial passing attack highlighted
by wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald.
But this is where the fairytale
season ends. The Pittsburgh Steelers,
a.k.a. the Steel Curtain, put
pressure on Warner, and the Steelers’
defensive backs show Fitzgerald
and company who really deserves
to hoist the Lombardi Trophy.
The Curtain will fall on Arizona.

I know Kurt Warner would appreciate
the biblical metaphor of David
versus Goliath for the upcoming
game — it’s fitting. The Arizona
Cardinals are the little team
that could, reaching new heights
with an old quarterback and a
bunch of unknowns and never weres.
Standing in their way are the
perennial monsters, the Pittsburgh
Steelers, steeped in tradition
and more championships than any
team in the history of the NFL.
I base my pick totally off emotion
and forget the numbers, because
it’s emotion that wins this game.
Both teams are at their peak;
it’s the team with the emotional
edge that gets it. Simply put,
the Cards take this one. Why,
because Kurt Warner will tell
you — they’ve got God on their
side.
