The Des Moines Symphony Academy has announced the launch of “Preludio Strings,” a youth Orchestra program aimed at first- through fourth-graders. Preludio Strings is now the fourth youth-oriented program the Symphony Academy offers, as the Symphony continues its drive to educate Des Moines’ young people and foster a lifetime love of music. Acclaimed pianist George Winston is coming to town to play a benefit concert at First Christian Church. There will be a DMARC Food Pantry collection at the door, and ticket sales will go to assisting First Inclusive Arts Ministries and 99.1 KFMG. Advance tickets are available at www.midwestix.com and run $20 for adults and $15 for students. Tickets the day of the show are $25 and $20. The concert will be Friday, Oct. 9 at 7:30 p.m.

This week’s Pick o’ the Week is at Vaudeville Mews on Friday, Oct. 9 as Omaha-based Cursive comes to town, playing along with The Olympics, and Derek Lambert & The Prairie Fires. Show kicks off at 9 p.m. Tickets are available through tikly.co and will run $15 in advance or $20 day of the show. Mahalo. CV
