Winter is indeed a season of change. Last month, JC Wilson announced that House of Bricks would book its last heavy metal show this November before undergoing a remodel, rebrand and name-change. Now word is coming down the mountain that, beginning in 2015, el Bait Shop will stop being a home to local music as well. While music has been somewhat of an afterthought at the venue, anytime the city loses an option for local artists to share their talents, it’s an unfortunate thing.

This week’s Pick o’ the Week is the Little BIG Fest Music Festival, which will be taking place in a number of venues this weekend. First, head over to the State Historical Building on Friday, Nov. 21 for a talk on the history of Iowa Roots Music at 6:30 p.m. After that, Gas Lamp plays host to the after party featuring the Reeferseed Express at 9 p.m.

Then, on Saturday, Nov. 22, go back to the East Village for music all day at House of Bricks, Wooly’s, the Beechwood Lounge and various local businesses. Acts include William Elliott Whitmore, James Biehn, Brother Trucker and Brooks Strause. For more information or to buy tickets, hit up www.desmoinesmc.com. Mahalo. CV
