Sound Notes

7/9/2014

Have you ever thought to yourself, “The Sound is great, but I wish I could hear it out loud in my car or home”? Well, starting this week, you’re sort of in luck. Tune into Ron Sorenson’s beloved KFMG — 99.1 on your radio dial — on Wednesdays from 1-1:30 p.m. to hear Juice’s Joe Lawler and Cityview’s…well, me, recap the previous week’s local music happenings and maybe even play a few of our favorite tracks.

According to a study released by the Greater Des Moines Music Coalition (DMMC), the music industry is alive and well in central Iowa. The study, commissioned by the DMMC and completed at Iowa State University, finds that the music industry accounts for 1,300 jobs in central Iowa. Most of those fall under the category of “music performance and promotion,” but also include instrument manufacturing, sound recording, radio and music stores. In all, the study goes on to report, those jobs have resulted in more than $39 million in labor income in 2013. Who says all artists are starving?

Your Pick o’ the Week is up in Ames, where you can see King of the Tramps at DG’s Taphouse on Friday, July 11. The show starts at 9 p.m., and $5 gets you in the door. Mahalo. CV
