The duality of Lindsey Morrison

The 28-year-old songstress hasn’t been seen gigging all that much lately — a tribute to The Doors here and there notwithstanding — and it’s been eating at her. Those who’ve had the chance to hear her sing in the past are missing her presence as well. Make no mistake, the girl is carrying around some serious pipes.

So, where did she go?

“I don’t know,” she answered with a coy laugh. “Crazy for a little bit?”

Over the past couple of months, Morrison has been slowly increasing her profile. She’s been sitting in with Nate Nelson at a couple gigs, and now she’s ready to step back on stage in proper form: at the head of her own band, Love Street.

“Love Street is my baby,” she said. “I didn’t answer a Craigslist ad for this band. I didn’t have to audition. I put it together just for me.”

Which isn’t to say that the other route hasn’t worked for her as well. She does, after all, also front the band Calling Out Karma.

“Calling Out Karma plays original songs, and Love Street plays covers,” Morrison said, explaining the differences.

Morrison enjoys the unique challenges that each band provides.

“With a cover band, you’re trying to be a crowd-pleaser,” she explained. “People know the songs and want to dance. (An) original band is more personal and probably more nerve-wracking. Because it’s your heart up there. It kind of feels like you’re singing your diary out loud sometimes.”

And, like most diaries, Morrison’s original work can be a little angst-y.

“I’m an angry chick writer,” she admitted, laughing again. “I only get the urge to write when I’m pissed off.”

Calling Out Karma has experienced its own slow road of late. The band recently parted ways with its drummer, which has given Morrison more time not only to write more original music but also to spend on her “baby.” And even while she’s having fun gearing up for some shows with her cover band, the original work is never far from her mind.

“(Calling Out Karma is) in search of a new drummer, but it’s very much alive,” she said. “It’s not something that I’ll ever give up.” CV
