Ankeny wine bar and grill opens

Ankeny has a new restaurant and bar in the Prairie Trail development. District 36 Wine Bar and Grille is now open for lunch and dinner. The new dining spot seats more than 240 guests indoors and up to an additional 60 on the patio. The new spot is seen as a modernized, upscale version of Urbandale’s Urban Grill, which has the same owners. The menu consists of steak, seafood, sandwiches and other entrees, as well as appetizers and desserts. The address is 1375 S.W. Vintage Parkway. Don’t call it a comeback

Two Younkers stores in the Des Moines area have made space for a new inventory of furniture. The Younkers at Southridge Mall started selling furniture mid-May, and the store inside the Merle Hay Mall store is set to do the same starting June 11. Furniture sales are on the rise nationally with the improving economy, and the two stores had available floor space.

New Broadlawns facility

A new medical clinic is opening on East University Avenue sometime this fall. Plans were announced by Broadlawns Medical Center for a new 10,000-square-foot facility that is currently under construction. The new building will help care for the needs of Polk County residents residing in the eastern corridor. Family practice and urgent care will both be available once the new clinic is operational. November of 2016 has been tabbed as a target date the opening.

 

1,000 new jobs in five years

The Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) board recently awarded financial assistance in the amount of $812,000 to Cognizant Technology Solutions. The aid is expected to create at least 1,014 jobs in the next five years, of which 116 are incented at a qualifying wage of $26.72 per hour. The assistance comes in the form of forgivable loans and tax benefits via the IEDA’s High Quality Jobs Program. Cognizant Technology Solutions is a New Jersey-based company that provides information technology, consulting and business process services to its customers. The company currently employs approximately 400 people in Des Moines. The new project plan calls for a capital investment of $9 million.

 

Quilt Museum is now open in downtown Winterset

The Iowa Quilt Museum in downtown Winterset is open and accepting visitors. The new showcase is not a collecting museum; its quilts are on display for traveling exhibits only. Typically, the museum will have three exhibits at a time, each with 30 quilts. Their first exhibit is named “Three Centuries of Red and White Quilts.” The museum is located where the former J.C. Penny Store used to be on the south side of the square in Winterset.  There is an admission charge to the museum, which is located at 68 E. Court Ave. and is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday; and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Call visit www.iowaquiltmuseum.org.

 

Hubbell adds 606 units in Iowa and South Dakota

An affiliate of Hubbell Realty Company, Hubbell Apartment Living, recently acquired 258 apartment units in Urbandale. The two properties — Candle Ridge Apartments, located at 4435 86th St., and Parkway Apartments, located at 3650 Patricia Drive — were part of a larger acquisition consisting of two additional South Dakota properties, bringing the total number of units acquired to 606. Hubbell now manages more than 4,400 apartment units in a multi-state region.

 

A new assisted living community is coming to Beaverdale

Hubbell Realty Company is set to begin construction later this month on its third senior living community, Edencrest at Beaverdale. Upon completion, Hubbell will transition the operation and management to a partner company, Senior Housing Management. The new senior community will offer state-of-the-art amenities, a culture of independence and an emphasis on providing a secure and warm environment for residents diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. The facility will offer three restaurant-style meals each day as well as transportation to appointments and other life-enriching activities. In addition, residents will have access to an in-house spa, exercise room and a beauty/barber salon. This is the third assisted living community built by Hubbell Realty Company and managed by Senior Housing Management.
