College student starts water accessory business7/23/2014
Austin Hayden, a 21-year-old Iowan and a senior at Truman State College in Missouri, created a company called ParadisePad to sell thick foam pads used as floating devices. Currently assembling and delivering the pads to 15 boat dealers and marinas in Iowa and Missouri, Hayden’s business has about $250,000 in sales since he started the business five months ago. The floating pads come in three sizes and can hold about 1,400 pounds. They sell for $450-650 and can be secured to a boat or dock with a 10-foot tether cord.
Thiele Chiropractic and Wellness opens in West Des Moines
Cory Thiele, who serves as the team chiropractor for the Des Moines Menace soccer team, opened his own practice at 5010 Mills Civic Parkway. His services include manual adjusting and spinal rehabilitation, among others. Thiele is from Sioux City and graduated from the University of Iowa and Palmer College of Chiropractic. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday; and by appointment only on Saturday. Men’s clothing store opens in East Village
Fugitive Apparel Co. has opened a shop at 312 E. Sixth St. in the space formerly occupied by Urban Belly, which closed in January. The store sells men’s clothing, shoes and accessories, including owner Zach Holtman’s own line of T-shirts, selling at about $22 each. Des Moines opens sixth Dunkin’ Donuts
The newest Dunkin’ Donuts restaurant is now open at 2610 E. University Ave. where Clayton’s Arts & Crafts used to sit. The new store is owned by brother-sister duo Jeff Kelderman and Lori Kelderman High, who also own Dunkin’ Donuts locations in Ames and Ankeny. Jeff Kelderman said he has plans to open a store on E. 14th St. and is starting construction on one in Marshalltown. The new Des Moines store is open 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Rita’s Italian Ice to open in West Des Moines
The new Italian ice shop will open its first location in Iowa at 9259 University Ave. in the Hawthorne Plaza Phase II shopping center at the end of July. The frozen dessert is made with real fruit and is available in more than 65 flavors. Rita’s Italian Ice sells frozen custard, light custard, frozen custard cakes, custard cookies, sundaes and other items. It will be open noon to 10 p.m. daily. New casino breaks ground in Greene County
Less than a month after it received regulatory approval, developers had a groundbreaking ceremony on July 10 for the Wild Rose Jefferson casino, located at the northwest corner of U.S. Highway 30 and Iowa Highway 4. Expected to be a $40 million project, the casino is the first license granted since 2010 — a decision questioned by Cedar Rapids officials who were recently denied approval to build a casino in Iowa’s second-largest city. Wild Rose Jefferson is expected to be completed in the summer of 2015.

Eberhart Capital, a private equity firm, has bought Contractor Sales & Service Inc., located at 2020 N.E. Broadway Ave. in Des Moines. The company rents industrial construction equipment such as forklifts, boom lifts and scissor lifts..
American Link opens store in Valley West Mall
The women’s clothing and home décor shop featuring American-made merchandise opened recently in Valley West Mall in West Des Moines. On the upper level next to Victoria’s Secret, American Link began as an online store that was a spin-off of a digital magazine by the same name.
