DMSC sets grand opening date

The Des Moines Social Club has finally set a date for its grand opening at its new permanent home at the downtown Firehouse, 900 Mulberry St. A free Grand Opening Party will celebrate the launch of the new space on Saturday, May 10 from 5-9 p.m. with a keynote address by musician David Byrne of Talking Heads and a showcase of the diverse, multidisciplinary programming that will be housed at the Firehouse, followed by an After-Party in the basement bar.

All that programming spans two buildings, multiple floors, an outdoor courtyard and features the Viaduct Gallery, Kum & Go Theater, numerous performance spaces, classrooms, non-profit office space and even includes Malo Restaurant and Capes Kafé.

                 

Fairfield Inn opens in Urbandale

A new 89-room upscale hotel opened this week in Urbandale, on April 10. Located at 8661 Plum Drive, the Fairfield Inn & Suites Des Moines Urbandale will operate as a Marriott franchise, owned and managed by Hotel Development Corp. The hotel offers guests access to the airport, downtown, Valley West Mall, Jordan Creek Mall, Drake University and Wells Fargo Arena. Rates begin at $119 per night. 14Forty for rent in Western Gateway

The new 14Forty multi-family rental community in Western Gateway welcomed its first residents last week. The $18.2 million project, developed by Hubbell Realty Company, is a historic renovation of the Mitchell Transmission Building and former home of Studebaker Corporation of America’s branch office. Michelle and Steven Pritchard are finding success with their Pleasant Hill business, Just Like My Art. Michelle designs greeting cards, starting with a 12-by-12-inch canvas that she moves into gloss and then scans. Coylie’s Bakery opens in MHM

Coylie’s Cupcakes ‘n’ More just opened in the Merle Hay Mall, bringing its old-world European traditional recipes and flavors muddled with its self-proclaimed “bright, whimsical American fun” to the diverse food offerings at the mall. Grimes welcomes Hope Animal Rescue

Owner Jed Hammen has turned a private experience rescuing a kitten into a good-cause non-profit, as he is currently converting his basement into Hope Animal Rescue, slated to officially open in June. Hope Animal Rescue is a no-kill rescue shelter and adoption center for stray and neglected cats. Hope Animal Rescue is holding a fundraiser dinner and silent auction at St. Peter Lutheran Church from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on May 2. CV
