Nothing says “I’ve got my life together” quite like going out for brunch on the weekend.

First, brunch-goers have managed to get out of bed and ready for the day by mid-morning. This may not seem like any great feat, but for young adults adjusting from college life, it’s starkly different from rolling out of bed at 10:20 to make the last few minutes of the McDonald’s breakfast menu while donning pajama pants.

Second, brunch is an acceptable place to drink alcoholic beverages before noon without judgment. Of course, tailgating is an acceptable place for morning drinking, too, but brunch is much more dignified. At brunch, you drive yourself home; at a tailgate, you try to remember how you planned to get home.

No, brunch is a special-occasion type of event. It takes at least a small amount of planning and preparation, especially on the part of the restaurant.

Americana Restaurant and Lounge has a Bombshell Brunch every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and it’s an event for the whole family.

The brunch buffet starts at $18 and includes more than 30 items to choose from, including a Mexican egg fajita station, a customized grilled cheese station, assorted pastries, salad bar, veggie egg muffins and a potato bar.

The bottomless (yes, bottomless!) Bloody Mary and mimosa bar is $14 alone, but the Bombshell Combo is a deal at $28.

The dine-in weekend brunch concept is nothing new (unless you’re a college student, maybe), especially in many of Des Moines’ finest restaurants. It’s the “bottomless” part that makes Americana stand out from the rest. Other eateries offer the same build-your-own concepts and buffet-style meals, but most are limited in the beverage department.

Americana’s beverage table is actually several tables joined together because there are so many options. The Bloody Mary bar showcases plates upon plates of different add-ins, including the standard vegetables, but doesn’t shy away from interesting new tidbits like Spicy Cheetos.

Thought mimosas were a standard combination of orange juice and champagne? Not here. Try a variety of juices, such as pineapple, raspberry, mango, passion fruit and cranberry — or mix them together and create a personalized concoction. Americana has several “suggested” flavor combinations with names like “#OMG” and “Maybe the Mango Ate My Baby” (made with mango, strawberry, orange juice and champagne). The combinations are endless.

And if you’ve ever wondered which is more popular, the mimosa or the Bloody Mary — at Americana, it’s the mimosa. CV
