'Alice' in the historical building

The Lewis Carroll Society is going to geek out on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with its North America Fall Meeting at the State of Iowa Historical Building. The day of free events includes a mini-festival of "Alice" films, lectures on Carroll and illustrator John Tenniel, a panel discussion led by Carroll and "Alice" collectors, and a gallery talk by Mary Kline-Misol.

Kline-Misol encountered the "Alice" books in 1983, and since has created a series of images based on the two books "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking-Glass."

Lily Tomlin to crack up the Civic Center

The Civic Center of Greater Des Moines will play host to one of America's foremost comediennes, Lily Tomlin, tonight at 7:30 p.m. Tomlin's award-winning career has spanned Broadway, film and television. Her performance will include sidesplitting comedy that will weave in stories from her Midwest childhood.

Tickets range from $42.50 to $52.50 and are available at the Civic Center box office and through Ticketmaster outlets.

Indigo Girl to visit Ames

Amy Ray has been half of the popular Indigo Girls since their start in the 1980s. In 2001, she went solo, releasing "Stag" on her own Daemon Records. Ray will be performing her punk-kissed roots rock songs at the Maintenance Shop at the Iowa State University Memorial Union with opening act Capital B (of Bitch & Animal) on Tuesday at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $12 for students and $15 for the public in advance. Prices increase $1 day of show.

'Murderball' star to lecture at ISU

Mark Zupan is the paralympic rugby athlete featured in "Murderball," a documentary film about the United States Quad Rugby Team and its journey to the 2004 Paralympics in Athens, Greece. The sport, dubbed murderball, combines soccer with the bone-jarring collisions of a demolition derby. Zupan will speak about his experiences as a quadriplegic rugby player at 8 p.m. on Tuesday in the Great Hall of Iowa State's Memorial Union.

Zupan has captured four Most Valuable Player awards and was recently named the U.S. Quad Rugby Association's Athlete of the Year.

'Life Stills' features Iowa-raised photographer

"Life Stills," a collection of photography by Des Moines-raised Sarah Madsen, opens at Grand View College's Student Center Gallery on Monday and continues through Nov. 4 with an opening reception on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. Madsen's photography focuses on intimate, and often subtle, observations from everyday life.

Her interest in photography began while she was attending summer classes at Merrill Middle School and continued through her years at Roosevelt. After graduation, she attended Bard College in New York, where she majored in photography.
