The Eyeliners
5 p.m.
Hairy Mary's

Sisters in punk rock, The Eyeliners formed several years ago when three siblings - Laura, Gel and Lisa - from Albuquerque, N.M., decided to start up a band. It was that easy. And now, with the band's brand of old-school, pop-tinged punk, The Eyeliners have toured the main stage of the Vans' Warped Tour for several years touting influences like The Ramones and Operation Ivy, and recently signed with Joan Jett's Blackheart Records Group. Jett even made some special guest appearances on the band's most recent release, "No Apologies." Having played with bands like Screeching Weasel, Fugazi, L7, The Queers, The Mr. T Experience and Flogging Molly, The Eyeliners have earned a reputation as an energetic and unpredictable live band. See the punk-rock girls play tonight at Hairy Mary's with Godawfuls, Love Equals and The Horseshoe Spatulas. The cost is $10.

"Tarnation"
8 p.m.
Pioneer Room,
Iowa State Memorial Union

Jonathan Caouette was raised by his schizophrenic mother, abusive foster parents and clueless grandparents in and around Houston, Texas. Inspired by horror films, musical theater and other forms of pop culture, the 11-year-old, openly gay Caouette began obsessively and tirelessly documenting himself and those around him with a video camera. Always knowing he wanted to be a performer, Caouette moved to New York City in his 20s where he acted in student films and discovered Apple's iMovie editing software, on which he assembled the footage of his past. The resulting collage, "Tarnation," is the emotional, heart-wrenching and utterly fucked-up story of an unwavering human spirit who, despite all hardships, stands by his less-than-ideal mother. The Student Union Board is sponsoring this free screening.

Horrorpops
10 p.m.
Vaudeville Mews

Who can resist go-go dancers? The Horrorpops is a Danish psychobilly band with roots in '80s new wave, old-school punk and '50s rockabilly. Though the female-fronted band formed in 1996, it didn't begin playing out until 1998, when it quickly garnered attention for its energetic stage shows and featured go-go girls - meant to remind the folks in the audience how to rock. Come remember how to rock as the band plays tonight at the Vaudeville Mews with openers Roger Miret & The Disasters and Left Alone. Tickets are $8 in advance through IowaTix or $10 day of show.

sunday16

Autolux
7:30 p.m.
Maintenance Shop

Recently, Autolux took its ethereal indie rock on the road with Nine Inch Nails' "With Teeth Tour" in support of its newest release, "Future Perfect." The band has also been tapped to record a "reinterpretation" of a Joy Division song for the soundtrack for "Control," a biopic about Ian Curtis, the perpetually sad, deceased frontman for Joy Division. Last spring, they played at the Maintenance Shop in support of The Secret Machines. Now, they're headlining their own performance with opener If Ever Was a Fire. Tickets are $12 for students and $15 for the public in advance. Ticket prices increase $1 day of show.

"Big Hearts, Deep Pockets" fund raiser
7:30 p.m.
Funny Bone

Laugh for a good cause tonight as local troupes Those Comics and The Patsies will join comedic forces for a good cause, as the "Big Hearts, Deep Pockets" fund raiser benefits the Heart of Iowa Chapter of the National Marfan Foundation tonight at The Funny Bone. Funds raised will go toward emergency-room awareness, pediatric awareness and Marfan research. Marfan Syndrome and related genetic disorders affect about 200,000 people in the United States. Marfan Syndrome is a genetic disorder that weakens the body's connective tissues.

tuesday18

31 Knots
9:30 P.M.
Vaudeville Mews

31 Knots is big in Tokyo. The band recently toured Europe and Japan with indie band Q and Not U, selling out a show in the Asian powerhouse city. And listening to the band's accessible take on math rock featuring amazing technical chops, it's a wonder they're not bigger in the United States. Formed in 1997, the Portland band turned heads on the West Coast for its blustery live performances, including shows with Modest Mouse, Califone and The Owls. Now, having signed to Polyvinyl, 31 Knots is releasing its most technically and aurally appealing material to date with "Talk Like Blood," an album released just days ago. Hear the band's new material tonight at the Mews when it plays with openers The Planet The and MRPF3. Tickets are $7 day of show.

Hypnogaja
6 p.m.
The House of Bricks

To know what you need to know about Hypnogaja, one must only know the bands this band has played alongside: Shinedown, Godhead and Depswa. The melodic hard rock band has also garnered considerable attention in the world of film and television, with songs featured on programs like "Las Vegas," "Sex and the City," "America's Top Model" and more. The band's newest album, "Below Sunset," features 13 tracks of Hypnogaja's moody, lyrically compelling songs. See the band tonight at the House of Bricks with openers Salt of Society and Parallex.
