Upfront: A hair-raising event


The Des Moines Art Center's Big Hair Ball 2005 will be held Friday, June 3, from 8 p.m. to midnight at the Des Moines Art Center, featuring wild hair, go-go dancers, extravagant fashion, music, dancing and food and drink.

Hair Ball-goers will be treated to an outrageous runway fashion show featuring real hair models and local celebrity "Big Wigs" donning wild new hairdos. The theme is self-expression, and partygoers will be able to transform themselves at face- and body-art stations or at one of the five themed hair stations.

Tickets are $30 in advance through IowaTix.com and at the art center or $35 at the door.


Dinner and a show

Due to its overwhelming success as a Mother's Day event, the Des Moines Playhouse, The Temple for Performing Arts and Centro will continue to offer a "Forever Plaid" show and dinner package on Sundays through the month of May. The afternoon begins at 3 p.m. with VIP seating for "Forever Plaid" at the Temple with dinner at Centro to follow.

Tickets for the Sunday show and dinner are $55, and are on sale by phone only by calling the Temple box office at 277-6261.


Goodwill golf outing scheduled

The Fifth Annual Raymond James & Associates-Goodwill Golf Classic, a "best shot" charity tournament to benefit the mission and programs of Goodwill Industries of Central Iowa, will be held at the Wakonda Club on Monday, May 23. Tournament highlights will include a chance to win a car, a hole-in-one competition and a raffle for a complimentary foursome to the Wakonda Club.

Lunch and registration is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. and is limited to 144 golfers. A shotgun tee-off is at 1 p.m. Registration fees are $150 per golfer and $600 for a foursome.

Zoo Brew events set

Starting Thursday, Blank Park Zoo will open its doors late for a special 21-and-over nightlife event. "Zoo Brew" will be held once a month from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., with all exhibits, including the new pig and large snake exhibit, open for viewing; "Beers Around the World" and finger food and beverages available to sample; and live music.

Thursday's theme is "Love Night," with music provided by Worldport. Future brew dates are: June 16, "The Crock-Tail Party"; June 21, "The Mating Game"; Aug. 18, "Summertime Blues"; and Sept. 15, "Animal House." Admission is $10 for the general public and $5 for zoo members.


Rwandan genocide survivor to speak

The Des Moines Chapter of the United Nations Association will present a lecture by Juliette Murekeyisoni, a survivor of the Rwandan genocide, who will speak about her experiences during that time in her native country and her life since as an advocate for refugees and human rights. "The Whole World Looked Away" will be on Saturday, May 28, at 8:45 a.m. at the Central Presbyterian Church. It's free and open to the public. CV
