Project update
Kickoff and drop-off locations have
been named in conjunction with the 48-Hour
Film Project, in which teams have just
48 hours to write, shoot and edit a
short film. Kickoff will take place
between 6 and 7 p.m. on July 29 at the
Vaudeville Mews. Drop-off will need
to be completed by 7 p.m. sharp on July
31 at the Java Joes coffeehouse.
Just 15 minutes before the competition
is to begin, each team must select a
genre and draw a character, prop and
line of dialogue that must appear in
the film. The films will be screened
a week later at Fleur Cinema and Caf,
where local judges will pick a "Best
of the City" to represent Des Moines
in the competition for the international
title.

An Iowa Fringe Button, needed for
access to all of the festival's events,

Iowa filmmakers debut documentary
A new documentary from Iowa novelist
and filmmaker Max Allan Collins, "Caveman:
V.T. Hamlin & Alley Oop," will
make its premier on Friday at 7 p.m.
in Perry's McCreary Center, 1800 Pattee
St.
Written and directed by Collins, "Caveman"
tells the story of Vincent T. "Snick"
Hamlin, the cartoonist who created the
dinosaur-laden, long-running comic strip
"Alley Oop," from which the
popular '50s song was derived. The strip
has been credited with inspiring "The
Flintstones" and "Jurassic
Park." Hamlin was born and raised
in Perry.
The screening is free and open to
the public. There will be a short question-and-answer
session following the film.
