Scene notes
If you want to see what real
blues looks like in the context
of high-quality artwork, don't
miss H.C. Porter's booth (521)
this weekend at the Des Moines
Art Festival. The Jackson, Miss.-based
artist returns for her third consecutive
appearance at the festival where
her bold, dramatic serigraphs
last year earned her top honors
in the event's 2-D mixed media
category. Discerning blues fans
rarely are afforded the option
of finding high-quality art representative
of the genre, but Porter's work
brings authenticity and class
to the field... Barbecue and blues
go hand-in-hand and you can find
both this weekend in Marshalltown
at the state barbecue contest.
Last year's contest drew 20,000
people and was voted "Iowa's
Event of the Year," and organizers
say this year's event is expected
to draw just as many people, as
well as 60 barbecue teams from
across the country. There's also
plenty of free live music, including
performances on Friday by bluegrass
group Lincoln Highways at 6 p.m.
and blues guitarist Michael Burks
at 8 p.m. Saturday's headliner
is Chicago blues veteran Jimmy
Burns, who plays at 6 p.m. The
two-day event will be held at
Riverview Park, located at Highway
13 N. and Third Avenue in Marshalltown...
Blues on Grand will be closed
June 26 through July 4... Two
new noteworthy shows listed recently
by Pollstar include Chevelle and
Taproot at the Val Air Ballroom
on Aug. 16 and the Jonny Lang
Acoustic Band Tour Sept. 3 at
Hoyt Sherman Place. CV
