Salaries and such
With five of the seven bargaining
units representing city employees
expiring at the end of June 2006,
the Des Moines City Council approved
new labor
agreements for five unions last
week, including library clerks,
library professionals, the Municipal
Employees Association, the Central
Iowa Public Employees Council
(CIPEC) and the Des Moines Police
Bargaining Unit (PBU) Association.
The most lengthy list of pay changes
were among the police, where,
starting next year, clothing allowance
will be bumped from $560 to $600,
bomb squad pay will increase by
$500 per year, bilingual pay will
rise from $200 to $600 per year
and life insurance will jump from
$15,000 to $25,000. In addition,
with the PBU and CIPEC switching
health insurance providers,
officials estimate the city will
save more than $1 million in insurance
premiums.
