Golf outing to benefit ataxia
The 2005 Talarico Ataxia Open will
be held at the AH Blank Golf Course
on Saturday, featuring two celebrity
golfers, Bobby Hansen and Ross Verba,
and comedian Willie Farrell as Master
of Ceremonies.
Over the past three years, the Talarico
family has raised funds through this
event for the National Ataxia Foundation.
Ataxia is an often-fatal, degenerative
neurological disorder that affects an
estimated 150,000 Americans. It has
no cure.
Registration begins at 11 a.m., followed
by a shotgun start at noon, a cocktail
hour at 5 p.m., pasta dinner at 6 p.m.
and a live auction and raffle at 7 p.m.
The cost for golf and dinner is $125
per person, with additional dinner guests
costing $25 per person.
Auction items include the chance for
two people to be extras on the television
show "ER"; six days and seven
nights at a three-bedroom condo in Costa
Rica; airfare and two nights stay at
the Palms Hotel in Las Vegas; a pool
table; makeup tattooing; a signed guitar
by U2; autographed memorabilia by sports
greats such as Michael Jordan, Larry
Bird and Mike Ditka; and more.

Visit the comic marketplace
The Iowa Comic Book Club, the creator
of Iowa's only comic book convention,
is hosting a Comic Book Marketplace
on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at
the Best Western Inn, 5055 Merle Hay
Rd. in Johnston. Dealers from the Midwest
will be on hand with 20 tables of comics
and comic-related collectables and merchandise.
Admission is free, as is parking.

Author's Des Moines visit rescheduled
The Des Moines Public Library's AViD
Author Series has been finished since
the spring. However, with the Pope's
passing dominating newspaper headlines
at the time, a free presentation by
popular journalist and author Cokie
Roberts had to be rescheduled. The presentation
will instead be tonight at the Hoyt
Sherman Place Theater at 7 p.m. Seating
is on a first-come, first-served basis.
"DU Lunch"speakers
set
With Drake University back in session,
so, too, is the university's "Let's
DU Lunch" speaker series. Mary
Andringa, co-chief executive officer
of Vermeer Manufacturing, a company
in Pella that specializes in machines
and products used to build and maintain
the world's infrastructure, will start
off the series at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday,
Sept. 7, at the Iowa Events Center.
The series will continue on Oct. 5
with David Stark, executive vice president
and chief operating officer for the
Iowa Methodist Medical Center, and Nov.
2 with Jeff Chelesvig, president and
chief executive officer of the Civic
Center of Greater Des Moines.The cost
is $15 per luncheon or $36 for all three.
