‘A long and fruitful
run’
Those who were reading The Sunday
Register prior to 1999 likely
recall the Sunday Big Peach being
part of their weekend rituals.
This was truly a unique sports
section, from its appearance to
its content, with writers who
were proud to be a part of it.
The Register dropped the Sunday
Big Peach in 1999, and a bit of
the paper’s uniqueness died that
day. This was more than a change
in the color of paper stock; it
was the beginning of a series
of changes that pushed The Sunday
Register from its heyday of 553,000
paid subscribers to about 235,000
today. America’s finest sports
section was no longer.
Buck Turnbull spent 41 years in
the sports department of The Des
Moines Register, from 1952 to
1993. He shares his memories of
the rise and fall of The Big Peach,
former sports editor Sec Taylor
and the changes in sports coverage
in our cover story this week,
providing an entertaining and
educational story for sports and
non-sports fans alike.
As always, thanks for reading.
