GoodSons
Chalk one up at Beaverdale’s
newest establishment
Mixing in a dash of old school
charm and new school accessibility,
GoodSons has created a place for
all types of patrons to grab a
bite, enjoy a drink or create
some chalk art. Located in the
Beaverdale neighborhood, the hybrid
establishment allows customers
to belly-up to the bar to watch
the game or enjoy a nice, relaxing
dining experience.
“I have been a bartender for 15
years, and the other owners were
looking for something different,”
said Aaron Milik, co-owner. “We
started throwing around ideas,
and it all came together. Beaverdale
is a great neighborhood and doesn’t
hurt business that we are located
on one of the busiest streets
in town.”
An L-shaped bar corners one side
of the space, while a bevy of
tablesw and chairs accentuate
the roaring fireplace in the dining
section.
“We have a great customer base
that changes all the time,” Milik
said. “At any time you could see
people crowded around the TV watching
the Hawkeyes, three-piece suits
discussing work or a couple of
bikers having a drink at the bar.
We are conducive to everyone.”
Happy Hour runs Monday through
Friday from 4 to 6 p.m., where
patrons can enjoy $2.25 domestic
bottles/drafts, $3.25 imports
bottles/drafts and $1 off pitchers.
On Sunday, Happy Hour runs all
day. On Monday nights, GoodSons
hosts a late night Happy Hour
from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. GoodSons
specializes in two things — martinis
and paninis.
“We offer 10 different sandwiches.
They are quick and delicious,
and you won’t leave hungry. Our
kitchen is open until 10 p.m.
on weeknights and 11 p.m. on weekends,”
Milik said. “We have nine specialty
martinis, but if you don’t see
it on our list, we can specifically
make it for you.”
GoodSons also has an extensive
wine list, with glasses ranging
from $5 - $9 a glass and $18 -
$32 for the bottle. With a fully
stocked bar, 10 beers on tap and
more than 15 in the bottle, customers
would be hard pressed not to find
something to drink.
“Along with great sandwiches,
we have a monstrous selection
of drinks,” Milik said.
An interesting add to the bar’s
décor is tabletops (including
the bar top) made of chalkboard.
Patrons use chalk to draw all
over the tables.
“I learned a long time ago that
if you keep people busy while
they are drinking, they are less
likely to break anything,” Milik
said. “We’ve had some amazing
drawings. It’s cool to look at
everything at night while we are
wiping down the tables. Some people
spend a lot of time on their pictures.”
While there, ask about, the “Milik
Bomb.” Milik concocted the drink
himself. The “Milik Bomb” is a
wolf in sheep’s clothing. It’s
a tasty, fruity drink that goes
down smooth, but kicks in soon
after.
“There are only three people who
know how to make it,” Milik said.
“It’s like taking three or four
shots, so I only let people drink
a couple of them at a time.”
Milik is proud of the early success
GoodSons has had and enjoys seeing
new customers stop in everyday.
“If you’re tired of searching
for a really relaxing and laid
back place to grab a bite or a
drink, then look no further.”
