Let the
games begin
First annual Des Moines
Winter Games kicks off Friday
We have some answers for those
of you who say there is nothing
to do during Central Iowa winters.
First, read this week’s cover
story. Second, sign up for the
Des Moines Winter Games. Third,
get your butt off the couch.
The organizers of the games
have created a list of 14 events
for people of all ages and interests.
If you watch too much TV, and
we know you do, then you have
likely seen the lively promos.
And if you read Cityvew; and we
know you do, you saw the eight-page
guide in last week’s issue detailing
all the activities. As a sponsor
of the Winter Games, we want to
do all we can to ensure its success.
So wake up and smell the powder.
If you can’t find something in
this week’s cover story to motivate
you to enjoy this Iowa winter,
you should pack your Hawaiian
shirts, black socks and sandals
and move to the desert.
Now let’s talk snow. We challenge
you to start off these Winter
Games with the polar plunge on
Friday. Or if shrinkage isn’t
your thing, take a shot at broom
ball or snow sculpting. On Saturday,
there’s a ski and snowboard competition,
or a downhill mountain bike race
for those who prefer going head
over heels on wheels. And then
there’s my favorite, the snow
kayak races. Now that looks like
real Iowa fun.
Those with a less adventurous
lifestyle can partake in snow
golf, sled races or ice skating.
And how about some snowball softball,
flag football or an extreme cross
country race? Sunday brings a
5K cross county race and an adult
5K snow show race. And nothing
finishes an Iowa event like fireworks.
Don’t just talk about this great
event, get involved. To compete,
call 262-4100 or visit ww.dmwintergames.com.
And leave the couch inside.
Thanks for reading.
