Family
tradition at Drake
Keno Davis continues
similar approach of his father,
but strives for more
We have all heard stories of
young men and women coming up
through the ranks of their professions,
starting in early childhood. They
were learning at a young age,
even if they didn’t realize it
at the time. I admire those who
choose to continue the path of
their parents. Growing up in rural
Iowa, I saw too many family farms
go by the wayside when the children
decided that working the ground
was not for them. Even in my own
family, I knew that I could not
effectively operate my father’s
business. Luckily, in our case,
my brother could and has done
quite well, even showing up our
father in many ways.
These family stories translate
into the world of sports, too,
and are never more apparent than
with the Davis family and the
Drake University men’s basketball
program. Dr. Tom Davis had a strong
presence at Drake and helped revive
the program. Now it’s his son’s
turn to take it to the next level.
Editor Michael Swanger tells
the story of Keno Davis in this
week’s cover, starting with his
youthful days of hanging around
practice with his father, updating
charts and watching game film.
His knowledge of and passion for
the game could hardly be matched,
and that is exactly why so many
felt he was the obvious choice
to lead the Drake men’s basketball
team. You will come to appreciate
his humbleness and his deep respect
for those he has had the opportunity
to learn from.
Keno Davis certainly has the
energy to lead the Bulldogs to
winning seasons, but he knows
it won’t be easy — it never has
been at Drake. He recognizes that
winning takes a team effort from
the president, boosters, athletic
director, coaches, players and
fans. With Drake’s history, the
expectations are not unrealistically
high, which bodes well for an
energetic, but patient, Keno Davis
and the continuation of a family
tradition.
