Coming
out of the broom closet
Wiccans are receiving
religious tolerance
Like most Iowans, I don’t know
much about the Wicca religion.
And, to be honest, I have never
really cared to. During the Halloween
season, however, the interest
in this subject matter increases
for many people, including me.
I must admit that I have been
fascinated by the book of Revelations
in the New Testament for some
time. I also have an admittedly
odd interest in too-close-for-comfort
movies like “The Omen” and “The
Exorcist.” As a youth, my friends
and I even spun a few albums backwards
to uncover secret satanic messages
and messed around with a Ouija
board enough to spook us all.
Our Christian parents would have
cringed had they known what we
were up to (but they probably
did these things, too).
These practices I mention only
further solidify the stereotypes
of Wiccans that many Iowans hold.
As customary, we strive to share
alternative views. Reporter Jason
Hancock tells the story of those
who proudly refer to themselves
as witches. He interviews local
individuals who are open about
their practices in hopes of creating
understanding. Their form of religion
is protected by law, and they
are now more outgoing in their
efforts to share their beliefs.
Wiccans are among us and in growing
numbers. You don’t have to look
far to find them, but don’t expect
to see pointy hats and robes;
look for the image of the pentagram
and pentacle — it’s a dead give-away.
Thanks for reading.
