The complicated
life of a student
Many temptations lure
today’s youth
Going back to school is an exciting
time for most students. The new
school year brings a changed landscape
of opportunity, as the moving
up of one grade is a defined step
up in the social ladder. This
is a time to see old friends,
favorite (and not so favorite)
teachers and new students. But
this is also a complicated time
of change for many students who
fall prey to the temptations that
young people face.
High school doesn’t seem that
long ago to most of us, although
the differences in the culture
become more clear as each year
passes. The future will certainly
bring even more challenges to
tomorrow’s leaders. One incident
like the Columbine tragedy can,
and does, change everything.
Reporter Jared Curtis takes
a look inside area schools and
talks with students, administrators,
security professionals and community
leaders about the pressing issues.
How has technology impacted cheating?
How safe are children in our schools
today? Is fighting a concern?
What is being done to prevent
bullying? And how has sex impacted
the daily lives of students?
These are serious subjects,
and ones most of us can relate
to, whether it be from our personal
lives or what we see in our children.
I encourage you to take the time
to read this week’s cover. You
will be glad you did.
