Election 2006

A leftward shift in political power in Iowa echoed the trend heard ’round the nation after the polls closed and the ballots were counted on election night. Democrats took certain control of the U.S. House of Representatives. Iowa two Republicans and three Democrats—including a surprise upset from Dem Dave Loebsack, who triumphed over the moderate Republican Jim Leach to claim the District 3 seat.

Leadership of the U.S. Senate was still hanging in the balance Wednesday morning, still hinging on close races in Montana and Virginia.

Here in Iowa, the governor’s seat went to Democrat Chet Culver, who edged out his opponent, U.S. Congressman Jim Nussle, by a 9-point margin. Democrats regained leadership of the Iowa House, as well as outright control of the Senate, which had been split between the parties for the past two years.
