The Plan B debate

When does life begin? That’s the real question, isn’t it? If we could just agree on this issue, abortion could become less prevalent. And I think most all of us would like to see that. Unfortunately, this is easier said than done. Many pro-life supporters say life starts when the sperm meets the egg. Many pro-choice supporters say it’s not until that union attaches itself to the walls of a woman’s uterus. So along comes Plan B, a drug the FDA claims may prevent ovulation, or stop the sperm from reaching the egg, or prevent a fertilized egg from attaching to the uterine walls. But does it prevent a pregnancy, or does it abort one that is in the works? The debate continues.

As you know by now, this week’s cover is about Plan B… or the morning-after pill… or emergency contraception… or whatever you choose to call it. It’s a lighting rod subject you will be reading more about in the media in weeks and months ahead.

At Cityview, our goal is to enlighten, entertain or, as in this case, educate. Reporter Bethany Kohoutek tackles a difficult subject head on and shares the strong views of those for and against this controversial contraception. Read on and you will also learn about the FDA’s views, as well as those of local pharmacists.

Now that election season is over, real discussions on meaningful subjects like this can be brought forth with some true purpose in mind. Meanwhile, we all need to do what we can to become better educated on the subject. That mission starts here.
